The Idiots at Bob Jones University Ban Real-Life On Campus
Bob Jones University in South Carolina bans homosexuals on campus (trespassing gays are immediately arrested), public displays of affection including hand-holding or dancing, and recently removed its very old ban against interracial dating. Over 95% of the student body are caucasian, and while G.W. was trying to get elected four years ago he spoke there about bringing "the University's conservative values" to the White House. This post isn't political, but I wanted to throw that in there for the heck of it. Anyway.
If you're an incoming freshman to good ol' BJU, here's a list of things you can leave at home because they're banned in residence halls:
- Posters of music or movie stars and fashion models.
- New Age music, jazz, rock and country. Oh, and Contemporary Christian Music too, you don't want to bring that filth on campus, no sir.
- TVs, VCRs, and DVD players. And using your computer to playback any of those isn't permitted either, just in case you wanted to sneak Shrek 2 in, 'cause it'll be confiscated.
Oh, and if you're off-campus visiting friends, you're not allowed to watching anything past a G-rated movie, plus cinemas are off-limits. And don't bother planning on driving off-campus if you're under 21 because underclassman are only allowed to use their cars to drive to and from home, nowhere else.
Listen up BJU students, this is the real world talking. There is more to life than G-rated movies and lollipops, and if you get fooled into thinking the real world will hold your hand after college then you're living on a fantasy planet. Homophobia is stupid, hateful, and wrong, and by going to school at BJU you're perpetuating an ugly part of human nature. Life is more than than white people sitting around campfires singing kumbayah and practicing abstinence, and the faster you figure that out the better a world citizen you'll be.
Wow, that's just sad. Where do you get this stuff, Mike?

Yeah Mike, where DO you get it?
Hahaha you forgot to link your source.

I wouldn't want to work in the BJU admissions department. Imagine trying to recruit for that school -- "Yes, BJU is an excellent school. Um, no, you'll need to leave all of your normal worldy possessions like electronics, DVDs, CDs, and magazines at home. Yeah, no. Even if you have owned and operated a vehicle for the last four years, you cannot have a car here until you're 21. Can I sign you up for our orientation presentation of The Wiggles in concert?"

At least they got something right. Hey, and their site uses good ol' CSS. They can't be that bad.... o wait.

Oh, more loveliness. Apparently, women must wear pants when they play sports. Women in shorts are too much of a temptation, it seems.

To be honest, who cares what they do? Those kids and their parents pay to be there, meaning they chose to go there, it is not like they were forced. Secondly, though I don't agree with their philosophy it does not affect me at all and it definitely does not cause me harm so according to Mill I (and everyone else) shouldn't interfere.

You really have to wonder about a place where the music of Michael W. Smith is considered too hardcore for their delicate sensibilites.
Yes, the people who go to BJU pay to do so (or their parents do) and they need that level of protection, as they are likely to be delivered a beat-down should they venture outside of the BJU bubble into the real world.
Meanwhile, bombing people in other countries is A-Okay, as long as those people are brown.

Hi Mike - It's John Z's girlfriend Michelle. We wanted to tell you we actually were ON CAMPUS at Bob Jones to go to their art museum (my dad lives in Greenville). He would tell you himself but he's too busy fixing my Palm.

"All weapons must be turned in for storage. Trigger locks are required for pistols. Fireworks are not permitted on campus."
That's the part that got me laughing. You can't have fireworks but by golly, if'n ya wanna keep a pistol, just be sure ta put on a trigger lock and keep it in storage.

I found this bit pretty funny:
"Hair must be cut in a traditional, conservative style... It may not be colored or highlighted."
And in the photo right smack next to that, the pseudo-blonde girl's roots are showing. Nice.

ugh. this disgusts me. i can't believe in our day and age, there are still people that are this ignorant and close minded. the world is not going to wait for bju. move on kids--you're not going to experience the world at bju. the world is so much more different than you see it.

Hehe, "BJ University"...
Ehem, sorry. God bless America!

Amazing how people who have no first hand knowledge of BJU can rush to judgement on statements taken out of context. Sounds like bigotry and predudice to me. Things written in this blog have either been taken out of context or are just plain not true.

For Mike S., if you would have read the paragraph the right way, the highlighted hair is for the men's dress code, not the women's.

In response to Mike, if you actually go to their website and read it you'll realize that none of this is actually taken out of context at all, it's all right there. Hard to believe, right? Well, sadly, it's true.

Fantastic Post.
So, you may posses a gun, but you must not have sideburn past the middle of your ear, nor drive. Infact you must not smile either.
They are missing a page from that "student expectations" section..
"What to expect when you leave BJ University"
- With a lack of 'real-life' items, you'll become hooked on DVDs, blood, drink, fags, sex and everything you should because you couldn't enjoy life while at uni.
- You'll be single for many years. No fe/male is going to enjoy your company as you'll be very boring. And you'll not drink. And you'll run about scared if you ever view a movie with adult content.
- Your work-collegues will bully you, as you are weak with a wrapped-in-cotton-wool attitude to life.

I’m probably wasting my time, but why not?
I’m a senior at BJU. Are there a lot of rules? Yes. Are your criticisms fair? No.
BJU “bans homosexuals on campus (trespassing gays are immediately arrested).” That’s not true. Bob Jones does take the orthodox Christian view on homosexuality (they believe it is morally wrong) and don’t admit homosexuals as students. However, if homosexuals want to come on campus, there’s nothing stopping them.
As far as firecrackers and cars, BJU’s policies aren’t that unusual. Combustibles are forbidden due to fire code, and underclassmen can’t have cars because of the incredible lack of parking. The University of Virginia has similar regulations for the same reasons < http://www.virginia.edu/housing/student/asnfaq.php#packng>.
TVs aren’t allowed as a space issue (the dorm rooms are pretty cramped). However, the dorms do have a common room with a TV.
As far as movie content, it’s banned due to the university’s religious beliefs. Personally, I really don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
The dress code is a bit formal. That’s because BJU wants to create a professional atmosphere on campus. Dress codes aren’t uncommon in the business world for the same reason. I’m working in a marketing/PR department this summer, and the department’s two-page dress code is eerily similar to Bob Jones’s. (At least I can just wear my school clothes to work – hey, wait, “real life on campus”.)
In short, before you go labeling people “ignorant and close minded,” make sure you don’t fall in that category.

How it can call itself a University is beyond me...
Perhaps those 'degrees over the internet' have a little more substance than this place.
Ignorant and close minded - definition of the born again or new-born christian mentality.
Just a hint: the bible isn't 100% accurate, and the old testament needs to be taken with a tonne of salt.

How do you know the Bible isn't 100% accurate? You seem to want to make a lot of Christian enemies here, incluing those that think ill of BJU.

Sure they are--follow the links from this page:

BJU wants to set up an insular campus, sealed off from the rest of the world. That's their business, but don't pretend it's not happening.

Its weird.both my parents went to Bob Jones and both of them are fine. They let me go to movies (yes even R ones)listen to music(including michael w smith), wear shorts, date girls,etc....so I guess not everything out of Bob Jones is that bad.....although they do need to get just a liiiiiill bit more up to date on a few things......not to mention realistic.
